Passion Flower Reviews
Passion Flower is indigenous in Virginia, and from the southeast United States to Argentina and Brazil. It is so named because of the finely-cut corona in the center of the blossoms to the Crown of Thorns. It is a woody, hairy, climbing vine whose stems climb by means of axillary tendrils. The stems can be anywhere from three to 10 feet long. Passiflora incarnata has a perennial root, and alternate, serrate leaves that are 3-5 lobed. The flowers, which bloom from May to July, are solitary, axillary, and from white to yellowish with a purple, pink or blue calyx crown. They are also very sweetly aromatic. The fruit of Passion Flower is about the size of a chicken egg, orange-colored, edible, and contains many seeds. These are often called maypops, granadilla, or water lemon. When dried, the fruit becomes shrivelled and greenish yellow, and the yellow pulp inside is sweet and edible.

Chemical Constitution of Passion Flower Powder Extract
Chemical analysis on passion flower extract indicates it contains three main groups of active chemicals: alkaloids, glycosides and flavonoids. Interestingly, when the glycosides and flavonoids are isolated and tested individually they have demonstrated the opposite effects for which the plant is commonly used for. Only when the two groups of chemicals are combined as a whole herb, do researchers observe the plant's sedative effect. Passion flower extract also contains naturally occurring serotonin as well as a chemical called maltol which has documented sedative effects (and which might explain the natural calming properties of passionflower). A group of harmane alkaloids in passion flower extract have demonstrated antispasmodic activity and the ability to lower blood pressure. In addition, a flavonoid named chrysin has demonstrated significant antianxiety activity.

Health Benefits of Passion Flower Powder Extract
Although researches on the health benefits of taking Passion Flower Powder Extract are limited, some studies suggest that Passion Flower Powder Extract may offer certain health benefits. Here's a look at several key study findings:

Treat Anxiety
People have used passion flower traditionally to treat anxiety, and continue to do so today. A study published in the October 2001 issue of the "Journal of Clinical Pharmacy and Therapeutics" found that passion flower was as effective as the prescription medication oxazepam for treating generalized anxiety disorder. A review of studies published in the February 2006 issue of the "British Journal of Psychiatry" mentions passion flower having potential for sedative use in people with mental health problems.
Ease Opiate Withdrawal
Another study published in the same issue of "Journal of Clinical Pharmacy and Therapeutics" found that passion flower was helpful in treating opiate withdrawal. Opiate addicts treated with passion flower extract plus the medication clonidine were compared with those treated with clonidine plus placebo over 14 days. Both therapies were equally effective in reducing physical withdrawal symptoms, but the group receiving clonidine plus passion flower had significantly better control over mental symptoms such as anxiety.
Congestive Heart Failure
An extract of passion flower and hawthorn shows potential for treating shortness of breath and difficulty exercising in people with congestive heart failure, according to the U.S. National Institutes of Health (NIH). However, research on passion flower on its own for this use is lacking.

Passion Flower Powder Extract Side Effects
Passion flower Extract can cause some side effects such as dizziness, confusion, irregular muscle action and coordination, altered consciousness, and inflamed blood vessels. There has also been a report of nausea, vomiting, drowsiness, a rapid heart rate, and abnormal heart rhythm in one person who took it.

Passion Flower Powder Extract Dosage
